CyberSec Roundup
A synopsis of the Latest Cybersecurity News
McLaren Hit by Phishing Scam
Darktrace revealed that McLaren (one of their customers) was hit with a phishing scam last year. Several high-value employees with access to confidential information were targeted and fell victim to phishing emails. They did not give details about the extent of the compromise, however, they confirmed that they block thousands of those types of emails weekly, as it is a common attack vector used by hackers.
FirstCaribbean SMS Phishing
CIBC FirstCaribbean notified their customers about an SMS phishing scam targeting their customers in the Caribbean. The text message attempts to fool customers that FirstCaribbean disabled their login credentials and they need to click the malicious link to regain access to their account. This is a common tactic used by threat actors, as legitimate financial institutions would not send these types of unsolicited links to reset login credentials.
Darkside Ransomware Targeted
The U.S. Department of State is attempting to crackdown on ransomware groups, by announcing that they are offering a reward of up to $10 million for intel that could lead to identifying anyone in a leadership position in the DarkSide ransomware group. They are also offering $5 million for identifying anyone participating in a DarkSide ransomware incident. Ransomware has been a serious threat to governments and businesses worldwide, with Darkside being responsible for the Colonial Pipeline Company ransomware hack in May, which led to the temporarily shut down of the pipeline that carries 45% of the fuel used on the East Coast of the United States.
