CyberSec Roundup
A synopsis of the Latest Cybersecurity News
Qubit Pleads with Hackers
The DeFi platform, Qubit Finance, was hit with a cyberattack last week and the hacker was able to make away with over $80 million in cryptocurrency. Qubit confirmed that they are tracking the stolen funds and are in contact with the threat actor. Initially Qubit askied them to be considerate and return the funds for a bug bounty of $250 000, since the stolen funds belong to real people and families. There has been no indication that the hacker will take the bug bounty (and avoid potential prosecution), however, Qubit upped their bug bounty offer to $1 million, then 2 million, in hopes that they will.
Jamaican University Ransomed
The Northern Caribbean University in Jamaica was the victim of a ransomware attack last week. Many files on the network, including accounting files, have been encrypted until the ransom, said to be in the thousands, is paid. Much of the university’s I.T. infrastructure is down and backups to restore the information have failed, however, the university does not intend to pay the ransom.
UK Braces for Cyberattacks
As tensions rise between Ukraine and Russia, UK’s National Cyber Security Centre is warning their organizations to be on the alert and ensure their systems are hardened against cyberattacks. This comes in light of the increasing number of cyberattacks against the Ukrainian government and corporate entities from Russian hackers. There aren’t any known UK targets at the moment, but they are asked to be prepared just in case.
