CyberSec Roundup
A synopsis of the latest Cybersecurity News
ManU Defenses Breached
The Manchester United football club revealed that they suffered a cybersecurity breach last week. While they are still investigating the full extent of the attack, they managed to contain the it to their internal network, as their website wasn’t affected. The UK National Cyber Security Centre released a report earlier in the year which confirmed other football clubs in the UK have fallen victim to hacking, and ransomware attacks.
Managed Hacked
Managed.com, a web hosting provider, suffered a coordinated REvil ransomware attack last week. In an effort to protect their customers’ data, the company needed to take their entire system down, which also resulted their customers’ websites being taken offline. REvil is demanding a $500k ransom in Monero cryptocurrency.
Vote Joe Defaced
Although the U.S. presidential election is over, the “Vote Joe” website was still operational, until last week, when it was hacked and defaced by a Turkish hacker called RootAyyildiz. He claims to work alone and isn’t part of a hacking group but issued a warning to Turkish political parties who are backed by the US government. The “Vote Joe” site has since been taken offline.
Holiday Warning
Imprerva Research Labs is predicting that there will be a higher than usual level of internet traffic this Christmas season, as most shoppers won’t be venturing into stores and will opt to shop online. Therefore, online retailers have to be extra vigilant against a range of cyber-attacks which will look to disrupt holiday shopping.
