Shoprite Extorted
The largest supermarket chain in Africa was struck by a cyberattack attack last week. Shoprite notified customers that their personal information was compromised in the attack, but not their financial or bank account information. A new extortion group called RansomHouse was behind the attack, as they posted a listing for the stolen information on their leak site.
Kaiser Permanente Breach
Kaiser Permanente disclosed that they suffered a data breach via an email compromise in April. It is feared that the medical records of nearly 70,000 patients were exposed during the attack. Protected health information such as patient names and medical record numbers were compromised, but no financial information nor social security numbers were exposed.
Glenn County Office Ransomed
Glenn County Office of Education and school districts suffered a ransomware attack in May, which disrupted the internet, VOIP phones, emails and financial software for schools in the county. The attack, carried out by a group called Quantum, resulted in 160 gigabytes of their information being stolen and encrypted. The County Office needed to recover the information and decided to negotiate with the threat actors. They settled on a payment of $400,000 in bitcoin in exchange for the decryptor.
