A synopsis of the Latest Cybersecurity News
Vaccines and Vaccination Cards for Sale on the Dark Web
As there has been a high demand for COVID-19 vaccines, there are some vaccines of questionable repute being offered for sale on the dark web. Darknet has listings for Moderna and Pfizer at various prices, along with fake CDC vaccination cards. Fake negative test results are also available, but the FBI has warned potential customers that they are taking an inadvisable risk in buying these items and giving their personal information to these types of cybercriminals.
HSE hit with ransomware
The Health Service Executive (HSE), which provides health and social services in Ireland, was the victim of a ransomware attack last week. They needed to shut down their systems as they investigated the scope attack. This has caused a major disruption to their service delivery as many systems were encrypted by ransomware. The Russian based Conti Group has claimed responsibility for the attack and is demanding a $20 million ransom, which HSE does not intend to pay.
Adobe Zero-Day Exploit
There was a zero-day vulnerability in Adobe Reader which would allow attackers to execute commands on a victim’s PC, and have control of the system. Adobe released a series of patches for this and other vulnerabilities (CVE-2021-21101-CVE-2021-21105). Adobe has confirmed there has only been limited exploitation of this vulnerability in the wild.
