Cyber Attack Closes College after 157 Years
Lincoln College, located in central Illinois, will shut down at the end of the spring semester. The predominantly Black institution survived many challenging times, such as a campus fire in 1912 and the Spanish flu of 1918. The pandemic also hit the college hard, but a cyber-attack last December crippled the organization’s ability to recruit and fundraise for a few months. This was the final straw that led to its closure once their systems were finally restored.
Ferrari NFT Scam
Earlier this year, Ferrari announced plans to partner with tech firm Velas to launch NFT products, but then one of Ferrari’s subdomains was hijacked last week to host a scam promoting a fake Ferrari NFT collection. The convincing scam had collected a little over $800 in Ethereum before the subdomain was taken down.
Costa Rica Declares National Emergency
The Conti ransomware group executed cyber-attacks on various Costa Rican government agencies, then posted 672 GB of stolen data. Costa Rican President, Rodrigo Chaves, declared a national emergency following the attack, so they could respond to the activity as criminal acts. The government has not determined the scope of the attack or how much information from tax payers and other related entities was affected.
