CyberSec Roundup
A synopsis of the Latest Cybersecurity News
Largest Private Ecuadorian Bank Hacked
Banco Pichincha and Ecuador’s Ministry of Finance were both victims of a cyberattack last week, carried out by the Hotarus Corp hacking group. The group used different types of ransomware attacks to compromise organizations and steal sensitive information. The bank in an official statement said that it was their marketing partner that was hacked, not their internal systems. The hacking group disputes that statement and asserts that they managed to hack the bank’s internal network and are in the process of selling its information.
Oxford University Hacked
Oxford University’s Division of Structural Biology suffered a cyberattack last week. A university spokesman confirmed that they identified and contained the threat, and are investigating the incident. The identity of the attackers is currently unknown, as they compromised biochemical preparation machines, but not any systems relating to patient data or records.
Defense Firms under Attack
The Lazarus hacking group has been identified as being responsible for an ongoing cyberattack campaign against businesses in the defense industry. According to Kaspersky, the Korean state-sponsored group has been using a malware tool called ThreatNeedle, which is usually delivered via spear-phishing email campaigns. When the malware is activated, it grants the attackers full control of the victim’s machine. Defense organizations in more than 10 countries have been affected so far.
