CyberSec Roundup
A synopsis of the latest Cybersecurity News
Russian Hacks
Six Russian hackers from the Sandworm hacking group were charged by the United States D.O.J. for hacking crimes between 2015 and 2018. These included malware attacks on the Ukrainian power grid, hacking attempts during the French Elections and the NotPetya malware which affected many organizations worldwide.
These hackers were also part of the GRU, as Russian state sponsored APT groups are not uncommon. Another state sponsored group called Energetic Bear was recently successful at hacking US government networks to steal government information, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
Recent Ransomware Attacks
The RansomeExx group attacked the Montreal STM public transport system with the Defray777 ransomware, which caused various outages last week. Sopra Steria, a French IT company, was also attacked with the Ryuk ransomware.
Benevolent Hackers
The group behind the Darkside ransomware have being trying to put their extortion money to good use. They decided to use some of their ill-gotten gains to donate to two non profit groups; Children International and The Water Project. However a representative for Children International stated they will not keep the money if the source of the funds are indeed from the hacking group.
